Making Art to Music…

The image says it all!

“To draw, you must close your eyes and sing.”
Pablo Picasso

Do you love music? We all do! As visual artists, we can have so much fun when we find inspiration from other art forms—especially from songs. He, like countless other great artists, understood the power that music can have over us. When I write the Meet the Artist series books, I always add a song to complement the book. Want to try it yourself?

There’s a cool technique in the art world called “Painting to Music.” It’s a unique activity that can inspire you to be creative in a different way while creating your art. All you need to do this is some paint, a brush, paper, and a song on your iPod. It’s pretty simple, but it can take you to some awesome places.

To get started, pick a song that you really like. It doesn’t matter the kind of music, as long as you wouldn’t mind hearing the song a few times in a row. Once you’ve got your tune ready to go, press play and close your eyes.

What does this song sound like to me? Is it happy? Sad? Excited? Nervous? Do some parts of the song sound different than others? What am I feeling?

Once you’ve thought about these questions, it’s time to start painting. Let the music guide you every step of the way.

Pick your colors based on the mood. If the song is happy, maybe you can go with some yellow and green colors. If the song is sad, blue and purple go together on a gloomy day. Just go wherever the music takes you. Let the song guide your way.

It’s the same with what you decide to draw. A song that sounds bright and happy, might lead you to drawing a beautiful sunny field of flowers. Likewise, if the song is frantic, you could go all Jackson Pollock and just start throwing paint everywhere. The neat thing is that it’s ALL UP TO YOU. There is no wrong way to do this. It’s up to your creative soul.

Crank up that volume, and start painting! Don’t forget to take a quick picture and upload it to our Facebook Page.

Have a Wackadoey Day, and make sure to come back to the website for more great acitvities! Don’t forget to check out our third book in the Meet the Artists series – A Visit with Vincent van Gogh.
